Importing a Hyundai Elantra from the USA: generations, model years and what to check
The Hyundai Elantra is one of the best-selling compact sedans in the world and a popular budget choice in Georgia — reliable, economical and cheap on parts and upkeep. It appears in large numbers on US auctions (Copart, IAAI). The Elantra's quirk for customs: the engine is always small — from 1.4L to 2.0L — so the base excise is low and age is the main variable. At the same time the Elantra offers an unusually wide range: from the economical base engine to the fiery Elantra N (~276 hp) and a hybrid. The key point — even the hottest Elantra N is under 2.0L (~1998 cc), so it sits in the same low excise band as the base car. Below are the generations, model years and what to check before you buy.
Generations and model years
5th generation (MD/UD), 2011–2016
A 1.8L Nu petrol (~148 hp), a 6-speed manual or automatic. There was an Elantra GT hatchback and a Coupe, while the Sport got a stronger 2.0L (~173 hp). A minor facelift came in 2014.
6th generation (AD), 2017–2020
All-new — a base 2.0L Atkinson (~147 hp), an economical 1.4L turbo (Eco, ~128 hp) and the hot Elantra Sport 1.6L turbo (~201 hp). A major 2019 facelift brought a sharp, angular design and more safety. An Elantra GT (PD) hatchback ran alongside it.
7th generation (CN7), 2021+
A bold "parametric" design. A base 2.0L (~147 hp, IVT), plus — for the first time — the Elantra Hybrid (1.6L GDI plus an electric motor, ~139 hp) from 2021 and the N Line (1.6L turbo, ~201 hp). The hot Elantra N (2.0L turbo, ~276 hp) was added for 2022. A 2024 refresh brought new infotainment and styling tweaks. This generation is the most in demand to import.
Elantra year by year — 2014 to 2024
Below, each model year is covered separately — what changed that year and what to keep in mind when importing in 2026 (age and excise). The engine is always 1.4L–2.0L, so age is the main lever on the excise, while the base figure stays low thanks to the small displacement.
Elantra 2014
A minor facelift of the 5th generation (MD) — a 1.8L Nu petrol, a 6-speed automatic. In 2026 it is well over 6 years old → the triple excise, but it is the cheapest at auction.
Elantra 2015
A stronger 2.0L (~173 hp) was available in the Sport. In 2026 it is over 6 years old → the triple excise, though the small engine keeps the figure moderate.
Elantra 2016
The last year of the 5th-generation (MD) sedan. Over 6 years old → a high excise; the following year an all-new generation arrived.
Elantra 2017
The all-new 6th generation (AD): a base 2.0L Atkinson (~147 hp) and an economical 1.4L turbo Eco. Over 6 years old → the triple excise.
Elantra 2018
The hot Elantra Sport (1.6L turbo, ~201 hp) and the Elantra GT (PD) hatchback were added. Over 6 years old → a high excise.
Elantra 2019
A major facelift: a sharp, angular design and more safety. Importing a 2019 Hyundai Elantra from the USA is a good balance of price and a modern look, though in 2026 it is 7 years old → a high excise.
Elantra 2020
The last year of the 6th generation. In 2026 it turns exactly 6 — a borderline excise, confirm with the calculator.
Elantra 2021
The all-new 7th generation (CN7), a bold design plus the first Elantra Hybrid and the N Line. Importing a 2021 Hyundai Elantra from the USA is one of the best choices — in 2026 it is under 6 years old → a low excise.
Elantra 2022
The hot Elantra N (2.0L turbo, ~276 hp) was added — and still a small displacement, so the same excise band. Under 6 years old → a low excise.
Elantra 2023
A carryover; the hybrid is especially sought after for its economy. 3 years old → a low excise.
Elantra 2024
A refresh: new infotainment and styling tweaks. Importing a 2024 Hyundai Elantra from the USA means one of the newest options at auction — in 2026 it is 2 years old → a minimal excise.

Engine and versions — which to choose
- 2.0L (base, ~147 hp): the most common, economical and lowest on excise — the best budget choice.
- 1.8L (5th gen, ~148 hp): the older, reliable engine.
- 1.4L turbo (Eco): the most economical on petrol.
- 1.6L turbo (Sport / N Line, ~201 hp): a sporty character, yet the small displacement still means a low excise.
- 2.0L turbo (Elantra N, ~276 hp): fiery, but ~1998 cc — the same excise band as the base car.
- Hybrid (1.6L plus electric, ~139 hp, from 2021): the most economical. Note: a regular hybrid is not 0% excise — only a full electric car is.
What to check before bidding
- Engine: the Nu (1.8/2.0) and Gamma (1.4/1.6 turbo) are generally reliable; check oil consumption and service history.
- Transmission: the turbo and N Line use a 7-speed DCT — low-speed hesitation/jerks; check the base 2.0L's IVT (a CVT) at high mileage.
- Damage history: most auction cars carry a salvage title — check the damage type and frame.
- Recalls: a VIN check is essential.
To assess a damaged lot see the Copart guide and run a VIN check.
Common problems — what to watch for
- 7-speed DCT (turbo/Hybrid): low-speed hesitation or jerks.
- IVT/CVT (7th-gen base): smooth, but worth checking at high mileage.
- Oil consumption: on some examples — check it.
- Electronics/infotainment: minor glitches in the early years.
Fuel economy and mileage
The base 2.0L does ~7 L/100 km; the Hybrid ~4.5 L/100 km, one of the most economical in its class; the 1.6L turbo is sportier and a little thirstier. At auction, 60,000–130,000 km is a good balance between price and remaining life.
Elantra vs the rivals — Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Kia Forte
The Toyota Corolla is the main rival: more conservative, with legendary reliability and high resale value. The Honda Civic is more dynamic, though parts cost a little more. The Kia Forte is the Elantra's sibling (same platform), often slightly cheaper. If you want an economical sedan with low customs and the option of a sporty version, the Elantra is one of the best.
Why the Elantra is popular in Georgia
A small engine means a low excise, parts are cheap and available, running costs are low and the look is modern. At the same time you can have a sporty N Line or Elantra N if you want one. Hyundai service is widespread and cheap in Georgia.
Customs and price
Every Elantra engine is small (1.4L–2.0L), so the base excise is low and the main variable is age — past 6 years the excise rises sharply. Note: the Elantra Hybrid is a regular hybrid and pays excise (not 0% — that is only for full electric cars). For details see the 2026 excise rules. Frequently asked questions
Does the Elantra have a hybrid? Since when?
Yes, the Elantra Hybrid from the 7th generation (2021): a 1.6L GDI plus an electric motor, ~139 hp, one of the most economical in the class.
What are the Elantra N and N Line? Worth importing?
The N Line is a 1.6L turbo (~201 hp); the Elantra N is a 2.0L turbo (~276 hp, from 2022). Sporty, yet the small displacement keeps the excise low.
Which engine is cheapest to clear?
Every Elantra engine is small (1.4–2.0L), so the excise band is the same; the main difference is age.
Elantra 2019 or 2024?
2019 = 6th generation, angular design, over 6 years old (high excise); 2024 = 7th generation, new, a low excise and more technology.
Which model year is best to import in 2026?
For balance, 2021–2022 (7th generation, under 6 years, low excise); for a minimal budget, 2017–2018.
Is the 7th generation at auction yet?
Yes, it appears in large numbers on Copart and IAAI since 2021.
Elantra or Corolla?
The Corolla has legendary reliability and resale value; the Elantra offers richer equipment, a bolder design and the option of a sporty version.
Is the DCT reliable?
Generally yes, but you may feel hesitation/jerks at low speed; service history matters.
Is there an Elantra GT hatchback?
Yes (MD and PD); less common than the sedan at auction, but it shows up.
Does the hybrid clear at 0% excise?
No. 0% excise is only for full electric cars; a hybrid pays excise (though low thanks to the small engine).
How long does it take to import an Elantra from the USA?
The full process usually takes 35–50 days.
