The 5 components of your total cost

1
Auction purchase price
The car's hammer price on Copart or IAAI. Salvage and clean-title cars are typically 30–60% below Georgian retail.
2
Buyer's fee
Auction house commission charged on top of the purchase price. Ranges from $300 on cheap cars to $700+ on higher-priced lots.
3
Ocean freight (shipping)
Container shipping from US ports (Savannah, Houston, LA) to Batumi or Poti port. Typically $900–$1,400 depending on port and season.
4
Georgian customs duties
The biggest variable. Includes excise tax (calculated per engine cc), import tax (5–12% of car value), and a flat customs service fee (~150 GEL).
5
Registration fee
Paid at the Georgian Revenue Service: 200 GEL for single registration, 380 GEL for double. Required before you can drive the car legally.

Understanding Georgian customs duties

Customs is the most complex part of the cost. Georgia uses a three-part formula: excise tax + import tax + service fee.

Excise is calculated per cubic centimeter of engine volume and varies by car age. A 2.0L petrol car made in 2018 pays roughly 4.5 GEL per cc (1,800 cc × 4.5 = 8,100 GEL ≈ $3,000). Import tax is an additional 5–12% of the vehicle's declared value. Electric vehicles with left-hand drive pay zero import tax and zero excise — a major advantage.

Shipping from USA to Georgia: what to expect

All cars shipped from the US travel by ocean container. The journey takes 25–40 days depending on the departure port and routing.

1
Pick-up from auction yard
After winning a lot, the car is collected and transported to the nearest port. This takes 5–10 business days.
2
Ocean transit
Container departs from Savannah (East Coast), Houston (Gulf Coast), or Los Angeles (West Coast). Transit to Batumi/Poti: 25–35 days.
3
Port arrival & clearance
Car arrives at Batumi or Poti port. Customs clearance is processed here — typically takes 2–5 business days.
4
Delivery
After clearance, the car is driven or transported to your address anywhere in Georgia.

Hidden costs that surprise buyers

!
Auction storage fees
If you delay picking up the car after winning, storage charges start at $30–50/day. Act fast after winning a lot.
!
Title & transfer fees
US title processing costs $50–100 depending on the state. Some states take longer — Georgia (US) and California are the slowest.
!
Currency exchange spread
The GEL/USD rate moves constantly. Budget a 2–3% buffer so exchange rate shifts don't catch you short.
!
Repairs & prep
Salvage title cars need repair before Georgian registration. Factor in realistic repair costs based on the actual damage report.
!
Port terminal fees
Batumi and Poti ports charge handling and terminal fees of $50–120, usually paid on arrival.

How much should you budget?

As a general rule: the final landed cost of importing a car is roughly 1.6–2.0× the auction purchase price for petrol cars. On a $4,000 car, budget $6,500–$8,000 total. On a $8,000 car, budget $13,000–$16,000. Electric vehicles are cheaper due to zero excise and import tax.

  • Add 10–15% buffer on top of your estimate for unexpected costs
  • Get customs quotes before bidding — not after
  • Factor in repair costs if the car has a salvage title
  • Compare total landed cost, not just the auction price
  • Request an itemized quote from your importer before committing
